The Picture: Katie Taylor wins the first ever female amateur boxing event in Ireland
The Story: Before any of the success that would come on the European & Olympic stage, Katie Taylor was a promising young boxer with a bright future. Fighting out of St. Fergal's Boxing Club in Bray and trained by her father Peter, Taylor would be part of history on this night in 2001.
The then fifteen year old took part in the first ever amateur female boxing event in Ireland. On the night, Taylor was in the first of three fights in a sixteen bout amateur card. Better still, she saw off her competition on the day, sixteen year old Alanna Audley of Belfast.
When all was said and done, Taylor had won the three round spectacle 23-12. Certainly it was a catalyst for the future success that followed. Inpho was there on the night that started it all for Katie, and here is a picture of her hand being raised in victory this day twelve years ago.
